US Navy Biography


Commander Schmitt received his commissioned from Oregon State University NROTC in December 1999, having completed his undergraduate education in Business Administration. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of North Florida.

Following Surface Warfare Officer School, he was assigned to USS Detroit (AOE 4). During this tour, CDR Schmitt served as Communications Officer and participated in various exercises and a deployment to the Persian Gulf.

In August 2002, he reported aboard the USS Taylor (FFG 50) as the Training Officer and participated in various workup evolutions and combined exercise Northern Lights.

In March 2004, CDR Schmitt reported to the Southeast Regional Maintenance Center as the Facilities Officer. During this tour he was selected for redesignation as a Human Resources Officer. His first subsequent tour, following his redesignation was in March 2006, to the OPNAV Staff in Washington D.C., serving as an Action Officer for the Director, Navy Staff.

In March 2008, he volunteered for Individual Augmentee duty in Afghanistan. Upon completion of initial training, he served as the Administration Officer, Regional Police Advisory Command, Afghanistan, from July 2008 to March 2009.

In September 2009, CDR Schmitt reported to Navy Recruiting District Seattle as the Enlisted Programs Officer. During this tour, he earned his Professional in Human Resources certification. In November 2011, he reported to the Boston Military Entrance Processing Station and served as the Commander.

In December 2013, he reported to the Joint Functional Component Command for Space and served as the Director, Manpower and Personnel. During this tour he attended Joint Professional Military Education II and earned his Joint Qualified Officer designation.

In April 2017, Commander Schmitt reported Recruit Training Command and served as the Military Training Director until December 2018.

CDR Schmitt’s personal decorations include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal (two awards) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
